Bingo Superstitions

For most of us, living in the age of reason is enough to stifle superstition, but believe it or not, in Bingo, it thrives! In fact, statistics show that three-out-of-four people carry good luck charms, whether they admit it or not. Some even perform a lucky ritual before they play.

Top Bingo Superstitions:

The special seat. This is so important to some erstwhile players that they will not play should their lucky seat be taken. In South Wales, two grandmothers were banned from attending a club when one attacked the other over a lucky seat. The victim ended up in hospital with a broken nose!

Naturally, such cases of Bingo superstitions are extreme, and most Bingo players tend to be a harmless lot. If you should find yourself tapped on the shoulder by an agitated player who’s been sitting in the seat you’ve just (unwittingly) occupied every Friday night for the last five years, it’s a good idea to gracefully give up the chair and find another. Obviously, whether a seat is lucky for you cannot be proved, but it does stand to reason that when a player feels comfortable in a seat, they will be better able to concentrate and enjoy the game.

Lucky dabber. The pen used to mark numbers on the Bingo card. Blue is the most popular colour. As it is considered unlucky to drop a dabber and pick it up, superstitious players will produce a new one to continue with their play.

Bingo numbers. It goes without saying that number 13 is considered the unluckiest, while number 7 is top of the pops.

Lucky charms. Some players bring cuddly toys, gems and even the old favourite – a four-leaf clover. One unwritten rule of lucky charms is that they must be prominently displayed during play.

Lucky dates. Some players will only play on a certain day and at a certain time.

Lucky clothes. Certain outfits are favoured over others as lucky. There are even lucky shoes.

Lucky money. Some people carefully place lucky coins in a pattern across the top of their cards. Others make a point of never leaving money on the table, since they may believe that it may imply they’ve got too much.

If you’re the type who prefers to crunch statistics as your reason for playing remember that Bingo is above all a game of chance – you might be unlucky every night for five years running, or you could win on your first night.

Whatever happens, cast your mind to the somewhat eerie fact that ‘dumb luck’ is still a force to be reckoned with – some people just seem to have all the luck, and every Bingo player usually knows someone who seems to win all the time, no matter how often they sit at the tables or how many cards they seem to play and their various Bingo superstitions.
